How it's worked out
price = (cost + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee % − margin %) break-even = (cost + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee %)Margin is profit after cost and fees as a share of the price; markup is (price − cost) ÷ cost. Wholesale
is priced the same way with its own fees and margin and no fixed fee. Each break takes its discount off the wholesale
price, rounded to the cent, and shows the margin left after wholesale fees.
Questions
- What's the difference between margin and markup?
- Margin is profit as a share of the price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. A $10 product sold at $20 has a 50% margin and a 100% markup. Price to margin — it's what your P&L shows.
- Why not just add my fees on top of the price?
- Because payment and marketplace fees are a share of the price, they grow as the price does. Dividing by (1 − fee − margin) prices them in exactly; adding them on afterwards always leaves you a little short.
- How do I set quantity price breaks?
- Start from the wholesale price and take a discount at each quantity. Each break shows its unit price and the margin left; one that falls below cost is flagged, so you can see how deep a break can go before a bigger order makes you less money.
